In today’s podcast. we discuss the impact of war on children and the professionals trying to support them, in this episode specifically in the devastating war in Ukraine. The American Psychological Association points out that the negative impact of war is broad-reaching, well beyond witnessing bombing, destruction and bloodshed.
Complicating challenges include:
• The loss of basic resources, such as schools, health care and housing
• Disrupted family relationships through forced migration and death
• Stigma and discrimination around which families fled and who stayed behind to fight
• A loss of hope in the future, and
• The normalization of violence.
In this episode, we speak with Dr. Corie Schoeneberg, a Licensed psychologist with expertise on childhood mental health and specifically in child trauma. She is the author of nearly 20 publications and was recognized as the 2020 Emerging Leader by the Association for Play Therapy. Specific to today’s conversation, Corie developed the Children’s Counseling Certificate Program for the Ukrainian Institute for Education in Psychology and Counseling, an educational program to teach and supervise new therapists in Ukraine.
