The start of a new year is an opportunity to reflect on the past year and set goals and intentions for the year ahead. We asked our wonderful therapists to suggest some reflection prompts for children and youth to foster healthy conversation and to create a sense of togetherness among family members. These reflections will encourage children and teens to increase self-awareness so they have a clear perception of their strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions.
Here is a list of their top five suggestions:
What is the one thing you wish you could do at some point this year?
Whether it’s learning to ride a bike or to swim or taking up a new hobby, like painting or sewing, there are so many opportunities available – have fun!
What are your top three goals for the year?
Unlike a resolution which is an intention, goals are specific and measurable. Brainstorm ideas – a goal can be something simple, like committing to one act of kindness daily, or taking the dog for a 15 minute walk every day after school. Create a way to measure progress and celebrate achievements!
What is something you find challenging and how do you plan to improve or overcome it in 2024?
Challenges can be opportunities. When faced with something challenging, how did you handle it? What strengths or skills have you gained or learned that will help you overcome it this year?
What can you do to be kinder to yourself?
Sometimes we focus our energy on helping others and we forget about being kind to ourselves. Writing down something about yourself that you admire, moving your body, and getting a good night’s sleep are just a few ways you can be kinder to yourself in 2024.
What brings you joy and how can you do more of this?
Think about happy times and good memories; now think about how you can incorporate more of these experiences in your daily life this year.
Take time to think about these prompts and remember to be honest and to practice self-compassion. Writing down your responses and organizing them can help make them realistic and achievable. Most importantly, reflecting on your responses will help you learn from the past and focus on where you want to grow, individually and as a family.
Happy New Year!
