National Eating Disorders Awareness Week was this past week (February 28 – March 4). It’s important to raise awareness of eating disorders because like other mental health conditions, there are many myths, misconceptions and stigmas associated with eating disorders. Contrary to popular stereotypes, eating disorders affect people of all backgrounds, and do not discriminate between gender, age, race, ethnicity, body shapes, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic status.

Eating disorders (ED) are complex illnesses. It is not uncommon for those struggling with an ED to have a history of trauma, anxiety, depression, and/or other mental health issues.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with an eating disorder, we encourage you to seek help. And if you’re looking for more information before you begin that conversation, here’s a list of resources to get you started*:

Hope So Bright’s 5K ADHD HERO RUN/WALKS are community fundraisers and educational outreach programs that raise awareness about ADHD. Today, it is estimated that only one out of two children diagnosed with ADHD receive psychological services which may include behavioral intervention. Join Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach on Friday, March 31 to “Light it up Blue” and kick-off Autism Awareness Month. At a special ceremony, Gary Feldman, M.D., medical director, Stramski Children’s Developmental Center, will speak on the impact of autism.
